New Year's Resolutions?

Have you made any? I have. Just one. I'm going to work on a book that's been languishing half-finished in my files for a couple of years. When I began writing this book I was completely enamored with it, but that was, I see now, my biggest mistake. I fell in love with the book before it was written. Then, the writing came hard. So, like a relationship that didn't quite work, I walked away.

Now I see my lapse in judgement. Reviving the manuscript won't be easy, but it is my New Year's resolution, to see it through to its completion.

What about you? What are you tackling in '08?

Snow!

Ah, the life of a romance writer is so, so, soooo exciting, right? Sure, I know you think I lounge around all day long in a lace teddy, eating bon bons and shivering with anticipation as I swirl page after page of romantic escapades magically from the ends of my fingers. It is what you imagine, isn't it? Come on, you can tell me...

HA! Think again, my friend! Today I'll be wearing my snowpants, scarf, hat, down jacket, big boots and mittens. No lace teddy. I'll be gulping strong black coffee when I dash into the garage to refill the gas tank on the snowblower. And I'll not be swirling anything magical from my frozen fingertips. I'll be pushing the snowblower, dreaming of hot, sultry summer days.

Yeah, the life of a romance writer is often far from romantic!

No writing, only shopping!

Yep, I'm completely into holiday shopping. I actually have most of my family living very far from me so I've got to mail everything. And if it's going to get out in time, I've got to start early.
I'm having a blast shopping for everyone but I'm stuck on what to give Granny Harriet. Think she'd like a copy of Canyon's Call? Or maybe Aphrodite's Charms?

They'd liven things up in the nursing home, that's for sure! :)

Heating up the holidays!

Have you read HALFPIPE ROMANCE from Phaze Publishing?

It's getting awesome reviews!

From Zoe at Sensual Reads & Reviews:

"What Molly knows about snowboarding should have been enough to keep her far away from the winter sport. Despite her clumsy ineptness at any sport requiring a board she agrees to go snowboarding with her boyfriend...

Kate burns does a fantastic job at keeping the reader hooked through out the story. The frustrations and sexual tension could be felt in Halfpipe Romance. I found it to be a marvelous read."

Why not pick up your copy today? I know it'll heat up your holidays! Snowboarding, anyone?

Harry Potter sells big!

I love this morning's article about the autographed Harry Potter selling for nearly $41,000 at auction. What an incredible thing to have happen! I'll bet JK Rowling never figured that would happen when she put her John Hancock on the page of this book. How cool!

Read the entire article here. It gives all of us writers something to aspire to, doesn't it?

Nicole Richie looks beautiful in a bikini!

I'm like everyone else. I look at the entertainment headlines. This morning Nicole Richie and her baby belly caught my eye. Why? Because she looks so beautifully healthy in a yellow bikini. The way she's sitting poolside, looking content, is heartwarming. I'm so happy she's found a reason to smile--and eat. :)

See Nicole and baby bump here.

If you're like me, the photo will make you smile!

Stephen King in October--does it get any better?

Richard Bachman, aka Stephen King, the god of storytelling, has a new book out. BLAZE sounds so fabulously creepy that I have to get it--today!

If you want to check it out, look here.

Oooh, I'm so psyched to read this book!

But she's got no male prospects insightand a mother that loves to remind Carrie that her biological clock isn't onlyticking--it's screaming. So when Jake Canyon phones he commands herattention. His voice is sexy, his tone is hot and he insists there is anew species ofanimal roaming around on his Alaskan ranch. Would she come and identify itfor him? Of course she will! Carrie knows that even if there isn't a newspecies to be found, a voice like Jake's is definitely worth investigating!

Four angels from Fallen Angels Reviews:

"I loved the wildness and the roughness of the Alaskan state. From the way
it was described it is a beautiful place and it went perfectly with the
story.

The characters were brought to life in a way that you couldn’t forget,
especially at the end of the story and I would like to see more stories
from Ms. Burns. Alaska is a state that I have always wanted to visit and despite some of Carrie's "wanting people to stay out of Alaska" this book really
makes me want to go to Alaska. Great job on the story Ms. Burns."

Four lips from Two Lips Reviews:

"I loved the premise of this story and I was entranced by author Kate
Burns'beautiful descriptions of the Alaskan countryside and the unique way in
which the ranch is run in harmony with nature.

I liked the way author Kate Burns keeps us guessing right up to the end. If you enjoy the great outdoors and lots and lots of hot sex scenes, Canyon's Call will be a satisfying read. I certainly enjoyed it."

Reading

If I say I love to read, I don't think anyone will be surprised. But I do. Love to read, that is. In a big way. Lately I've been devouring books. Just can't seem to get them fast enough. Load them in my reader and hit the beach.

Last night I read GEORGIE AND HER DRAGON by Sahara Kelly. I loved it! Fantasy and humor all in a quick and easy read. Just too good.

Now, what shall I read today? Any ideas?

Stephen King

I finished reading The Stand for the gazillionth time last night. Anyone else a fan? God, I love the way that man writes! He scares the bejeezus out of me every time, even though I'm usually rereading so I know what's going to happen next. It's not as if I'm clueless, but still...he scares the crap out of me.

I love to be scared. Maybe that's why October, with its scary goblins, ghosts and the like, is my favorite month?

Boo!

More Halloween fun...Vampire?

You Could Not Be a Vampire
Sorry, but you're not just cut out for flesh eating, turning into a bat, and living forever. But that's okay. The sight of blood turns your stomach... without even thinking of drinking it.And while you definitely would never be a vampire, you're exactly the type of frail prey Dracula wannabe's crave.Maybe it's time to arm yourself with a cross and some nasty garlic breath!
What you would like best about being a vampire: The raw power (though you wouldn't admit it to anyone)
What you would like least about being a vampire: The whole killing thing

Love Lessons review!

Four Angels from Fallen Angel Reviews!

Here's what Amanda had to say about Love Lessons:

"Jenn has run into a rut in her sex life. The guy she is dating now is terrific out of bed, but he is worthless in it. Not knowing what else to do, she turns to her friend Glory who sends her to an adult shop called Bare Minimum to try to get things fired up with her boyfriend. Deciding instead to just end things with him, Jenn calls him and ends their relationship. After all, there’re better men out there, right?

However, deciding she could still use some tricks up her sleeve, she swallows her shyness and goes inside to talk to Greg, Bare Minimum’s owner. Once she talks to Greg she gets other thoughts in her head. Greg is gorgeous and sexy as all get out. He also offers to teach her a few lessons in the lovemaking department.

When Jenn goes to meet Greg for their lesson, things get a little kinky. Greg makes it a point to give and show Jenn anything and everything she wants. However, what happens when the student becomes the teacher?

What an engaging and hot read. I loved how Jenn went from meek mouse to scorching firebrand. Greg was hot and sexy. The sex scene was magnificent. The student to teacher theme was a lot of fun. As a matter of fact, everything about Love Lessons was great. According to the author herself, she is new to writing erotica, but I have to say, Kate Burns writes erotica like a pro. I am very excited to read more stories from Kate Burns in the future."

Yes, it's October. But here in the northeast it feels like August. It is gorgeous today, blue skies and sunny. I can't resist. Taking the laptop to the beach and hoping that no one else has that same idea. Looking for quiet hours to write and relax, listening to the lull of the Atlantic.

Thinking of beginning something new today...

Aphrodite's Charms

Still tossing around the idea of a sequel to Aphrodite's Charms. Since a reader asked about what happens next for Diana and Spyros, I've been asking myself that same question. What does happen?

Excerpt from Aphrodite's Charms:

A warm breeze met them as they stepped out onto the enormous stone terrace. Her heels clicked against the ancient stones as he led her to the ornate, wide carved stone railing. They leaned against it, comfortable on the conspicuous sturdiness of the railing. There was no question of safety on the terrace; it looked, even in the darkness, as if it had withstood the endless caresses of thousands of days and nights already and would withstand more for many lifetimes to come.

“Look at that sky,” breathed Diana, dropping her head back so that her face tilted up to meet the expanse of black above them. Dotted with glittering stars, it looked like a child’s painting of the night sky—total blackness with an excess of white stars. “So beautiful.”

His voice was tender, low and slow. “Yes, very beautiful.”

“I don’t recall any other sky looking quite the way it does here,” she said, not taking her eyes from the stars above them. “I remember the last time I was here; I fell in love with the sky on the very first night.”

“With your husband,” Spyros said. “You were here last with your husband, weren’t you?”

“Oh, so that’s one of the things that your investigation revealed? Parts of my personal life?” she asked as she dropped her eyes to meet his. “Is that all you’ve got to ‘show’ me—things I am already aware of about myself? Painfully aware of, in some cases?” Even to her own ears her voice sounded angry, cutting through the sounds of the night like a hot knife through ice cream. Diana turned, walking toward the glass doors, her heels sounding like gunshots on the tiles. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to go back to the inn now.”

Spyros reached out and grabbed her, spinning her around so rapidly that her body collided with his. He steadied her with his hands on her shoulders as she glared up at him.

“Let me go! Do you understand? Take your hands off of me!”

“This I cannot do,” he said, his voice quiet in comparison to hers. “I did not mean to intrude on your private pain, Diana. I only wanted to...to—”

Her body lay against his intimately. She could feel every strong, muscular plane of him, feel his thighs pressed against hers and feel the thudding of his heart against her breasts. His breath, hot and scented with the sweet wine, fell against her cheek. She felt him, too, in a more intimate spot. His prominent masculine bulge was against her hip and she felt him pressing against her more firmly with each movement she made.

From Coffee Time Romance:"Diana Boldt is a newly widowed woman who is still in love with her husband. It was so incredibly special and they shared such a deep love for one another that she never thought she would find another man that could appeal to her on that level.

Spyros Petronikos has arranged to meet with Diana for a business deal, but he quickly changes his mind to include her on a much more personal level if she will just let him into her heart.

Diana’s visit to the same exotic island that she and her husband shared their love leaves her feeling very alone. She is haunted by her past and her ghost lover, too afraid to reach out and touch what is right in front of her. When she finally does, and opens her heart, fate seems to intervene cruelly ripping them apart.

I lost myself in this entrancing story, set in an exotic and lush background, it sweeps you up from the first page. The relationship was realistic and developed at a nice pace. The secondary characters are as well developed as the primary characters The sex scenes are hot and the emotions run high. Kate Burns is a very gifted storyteller. If you want a romance that will touch your heart, I suggest you read Aphrodite’s Charms." -- Missy, Reviewer for Coffee Times Romance

Cocktail time!

Like I said, Halloween pre-thought goes on for weeks in my house. Last night I was thinking about a Halloween party I went to last year. Yikes! The ghosts weren't the only things flapping in the breeze that night, let me tell you! But, um, more about that at another time. I promise.

One of the things that stands out in my mind about that night is the drink I was served. Supposed to be smooth and light. Yeah, it was smooth all right--so smooth that it went down reeeeal easy.

Here's the recipe for an Irish Ghost. Woooooo...

1 shot coffee liqueur
2 shots heavy cream
1 shot irish cream
1 shot irish mist

Shake, then serve over crushed ice.

Summer's winding down here in the northeast. I'm lucky that I live near a beach. My writing schedule suffers, but my soul soars. I love walking on the beach, and now that we're nearly at the end of our warm-weather days, I'm taking every chance to walk on the sand. Last night we had a little storm, some thunder and lightning and an hour or two of rain. You know what that means, don't you? The ocean has tossed up some new, interesting, exciting things onto shore!

I'm off to find out what Neptune has deposited on the sand for me. Hope you have a fab day! Mine is going to be spent with sand between my toes.

New look

Gave my blog a new look this morning--what do you think? I had a blast browsing through the gazillions (alright, maybe it wasn't gazillions, but it was a lot) of templates, trying to choose just the right one for my spot in cyberspace. I like this one because of the kiss. Let's face it, I'm a romantic at heart. Big time. And kissing? Gets me every time. :)

Soon I'll have my book covers back in place. For now, please remember that you can find my work at Phaze and Linden Bay Romance *links on right!* so if you need a taste of hot, steamy romance (with a lot of kissing, I promise!) head on over to either of those spots. Me? I'm going to sit back and think about men, kissing, sunsets, and all the stuff that makes my heart go bumpety-bump. Then, I'm going to write about it.

Got hot? Get INTO THE HEAT!

The buzz on INTO THE HEAT is really sizzling!

From Ecataromance, Amelia Richard said:

"INTO THE HEAT sizzles with unbridled desires and passion...

With a firefighter theme for her Heatsheet, the talented Kate Burns takes readers into the world of those men and women who protect others and many natural creations. Her hero and heroine are both firejumpers, who find themselves battling dangerous situations plus the potent attraction between them. Ms. Burns has created appealing characters with Delia and Cooper, where readers slowly become privy to their innermost thoughts. Seeing how these two handle their yearnings was powerfully depicted, making their moments together almost as hot as the fires often surrounding them. This couple also proves how dedicated they are to their careers, as they never put themselves before their work as they know how every second counts when it comes to controlling a fire. The setting for this story is graphically visual, as I often felt as though I was right beside Delia and Cooper during every situation they faced, whether everyday chores or a threatening blaze. INTO THE HEAT is an engaging story where flames often erupt without warning."

Tanya at Joyfully Reviewed said:

"... Into the Heat is a ‘smokin hot’ romance about two smoke jumpers. I enjoyed Kate Burns descriptions about the gear and the set ups for fire watching. The story is fast paced and you are able to see a lot of what Delia is thinking, both her insecurities and as well as her desires. Into the Heat is a great break from the normal men/women in uniform romances and worth your read."

And Aviana at Two Lips Reviews gave INTO THE HEAT a FIVE LIP RATING!!

"...Into the Heat by Kate Burns is a beautifully written short story full of fine detail that drew me into the narrative. The plot unfolds slowly but with perfect cadence, and nothing seems rushed. I especially appreciated the rare glimpse we’re given of what it’s like for smoke jumpers heading into a fire when the natural instinct is to flee. Author Kate Burns portrays our couple, Delia and Coop, in a very realistic way. Action oriented by nature and profession, it seems perfectly natural they would hem and haw to avoid facing their feelings. Into the Heat is an excellent read and I highly recommend it."

Have you read INTO THE HEAT yet?

All right, I'll admit it--I've got a thing for cars. My uncle owns an autoshop and I spent a lot of time growing up hanging around there. What girl wouldn't? All the hot guys wearing tight jeans and skin-hugging white tee shirts. Yowsa!

So this caught my eye.

Canyon's Call review

Romance Reviews Today had this to say about Canyon's Call:

"Carrie Reed is a geneticist and veterinarian, who has hoped all of her life to discover a new species of animal. So, when rancher Jake Canyon calls to tell her about an animal he sighted, Carrie is excited about the possibilities. And, after meting Jake, the possibility of finding a new type of animal isn’t the only thing exciting her...

CANYON’S CALL is an intensely erotic book with an interesting setting. Kate Burns brings the rugged Alaskan wilderness to life, much as she does her characters. Carrie and Jake are instantly attracted to each other, and it doesn’t take them long to act on that attraction. In between all of the bouts of hot sex that they are having, Carrie and Jake do manage to get to know one another, but will it be enough to make Carrie leave behind her veterinary practice and move to the wilds of Alaska? Read CANYON’S CALL and find out." -- Jennifer Bishop

Canyon's Call is available at Phaze Publishing.

Writing on days when the sun's shining

I don't know about you but I'm a sucker for a sunshiney day. I want to go out, work in my flower beds, head to the beach, do anything but stay inside. Blech. Stay indoors? While the sun shines? Uh uh. There are too many gloomy, cold days here in Martha's Vineyard for me to waste a sunny one.

Taking my lappie outside today. The sun is shining, birds are twittering and I'm ready to write the next great novel. Uh, or at least my version of it. Um...unless the beach calls too loudly. Then all bets are off. Writing will wait. The beach? Soon it's gonna be snowy and freezing.

Yeah, I'm going to the beach. Wouldn't you?

I love this cover. I love the story, and the cover. Yep, I had a super time writing this and love it that people are reading it.

Aphrodite's Charms

Recently I was asked by a reader about doing a sequel to Aphrodite's Charms, a book published by Linden Bay Romance. Hmm...I began to wonder and as we speak I'm fleshing out the ideas for the second story.

For those of you who haven't read Aphrodite's Charms, I've added a quick excerpt. Also a review. As I said, it's available at Linden Bay Romance. I hope you take a look!

Canyon's Call

I loved writing this book. Carrie, the heroine, is smart and sexy and has a blast with Jake. Just the perfect read for a hot summer day...

An excerpt from Canyon's Call:

Jake leaned down closer, lessening the gap between their faces slightly. His arms were on either side of her body and she felt encircled by the full, masculine form. It was a good feeling, one she hadn'texperienced in so long that she nearly didn't recall how wonderful it wasto be this close to a man.

When his lips touched hers a flash of white-hot heat shot up herspine. With only a fraction of a second's hesitation, her lips responded tothe gentle touch of his and within moments they were pressed together inthe doorway. Their arms were around each other and their bodies alreadylost to the desires neither of them knew were so close to the surface.

Carrie pulled Jake into her room and he kicked the door closedbehind them. While they were at dinner some thoughtful hotel employeehad lit a fire. It crackled warmly in the small brick fireplace as theirbodies moved toward it, like moths to a flame. When Carrie's backsettled onto the plush hearth rug and his body covered hers it felt asnatural as anything ever had.

"Carrie," moaned Jake, pulling his lips from hers. He looked downat her, saw her flushed face and wide green eyes and moaned a secondtime. "I want you, Carrie. You feel so damn good—so damn—oh!"His eyebrows lifted in surprise at the touch of her hand on his ass, pulling his hardness against her hip. Her firm grip left no doubt aboutwhat she wanted to feel pressed to her body.

"Ah," he said, dropping his mouth to hers.

Reviews for INTO THE HEAT

I love reviews. Good or bad, they're an indication that someone, somewhere, read what I wrote. And for me, there is no greater joy. Of course, when the reviews are good 'uns, I'm even happier. They're coming in for INTO THE HEAT, and I am tickled!!

Just a few...

Amelia Richard at Ecataromance gave it four stars and said...

"With a firefighter theme for her Heatsheet, the talented Kate Burns takes readers into the world of those men and women who protect others and many natural creations.

Carly at Fallen Angel Review gave it five angels and said...

"This compact story delivers so much in such a short space it’s compelling to the highest degree. I learned a huge amount about smoke jumpers and the job they do. I have always respected this profession but now I am completely blown away by the whole idea of battling forest fires. This story highlights the work fire jumpers do but also shows that beneath the heavy gear, ordinary folks do this job. People who love and laugh and have hot, sexy lives! I particularly enjoyed the depth of emotion felt in these two characters. I could feel their relationship develop and I wanted them to succeed. When they were pulled into the fire, I wanted them to live. Kate Burns delivers an action-packed, sexy story that is sure to titillate, enlighten and entertain. I loved Into the Heat, it was my idea of sizzling on many, many levels!"

Summer Reading

Uh, what's in your beach bag? If you're like me, you've got the usual crap. Sunscreen, lip gloss, hair brush, (sense a trend here?), water bottle, PB&J sandwich, and a book. That's right, a book. At least one, maybe two. Since I've started reading ebooks, I carry my PDA even to the beach. I can get over a hundred ebooks on that baby, and just read away...

Reading a lot of new authors. Reading a lot of great stuff.

So, what's in your beach bag? And what are you reading?

Feeling lucky?

I just saw on the news that thousands of people are getting married today. 7-7-07, a lucky day? Typically on a July weekend 30,000 people marry. This weekend? Closer to 90,000 is the predicted number.

What do you think? Does luck come in numbers? Or is it something you make yourself?

Me, I'm feeling lucky...no matter what the date is.

Into the Heat

I just love this cover!! So hot and sexy!
Into the Heat is available from PHAZE.
Being a firejumper is hot enough, but when Delia finds herself assigned to a remote cabin for two weeks with fellow firejumper Cooper Tallman, things begin to really heat up. She and Coop take care of all their assignments at the post while doing their best to ignore the growing attraction between them. They manage to keep their internal fires at bay until one afternoon when circumstances throw them into such close contact they can't ignore their smoldering bodies.
When duty calls they, of course, answer. But the forest around the couple is not the only thing ablaze and they begin to realize they cannot ignore their feelings for much longer--or can they?
After all, in a wildfire anything can happen. There are no guarantees, and not every flame can be extinguished.

A Secret...

I've got a secret. It's a big one. A happy one.

But alas, it's still a secret, so I can't share it...yet.

Soon, I promise.

Until then, you'll know why I'm grinning. ;-)

A surprise!

My Nonna visited yesterday. There's nothing like an Italian granny's cookie recipe. She brought the cookies, I'm sharing the recipe with all of you. I asked, she said it was okay! ;-) So dig in, these are great!!

Strufoli

3 cups all-purpose flour
4 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 tablespoon lemon zest
1 1/2 cups honey
3/4 cup pine nuts
2 1/4 ounces colored candy sprinkles

Melt the butter.

Place 2-1/2 cups of flour in a large bowl. Add sugar, baking powder, lemon rind and salt and mix well.

Make a depression in the center of mixture. Drop in eggs and butter. Mix until dough forms. Add remaining 1/2 cup of flour if needed. Knead dough on floured surface until it is smooth and elastic.

Break off pieces of dough and roll into ropes. Cut into pieces 1/4 inch long. Roll these pieces into little balls and set aside.

In a frying pan, heat oil about 2 inches deep. Fry balls until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

In a large saucepan over medium heat, bring 1-1/2 cups of honey to a boil. Let honey boil gently for about 3 minutes before dropping in fried balls, stirring with wooden spoon until they are well-coated.

Remove balls from honey with a slotted spoon and place in a deep dish or mound them on a platter. Sprinkle surface evenly with colored sprinkles, if desired.

Mmm, so good!!

Grazie mille, Nonna!

Sultry Saturday

Hot and steamy, just like I like my Saturdays. It is one of those ice cream-licking, ocean-dunking, stay-0ut-till-midnight summerlike days. I've got plans to wash the car, plant flowers and lay in the hammock all afternoon with a good book.

What about you? What do you have planned for a sultry Saturday?

Aphrodite's Charms

Aphrodite's Charms

"I lost myself in this entrancing story, set in an exotic and lush background, it sweeps you up from the first page. The relationship was realistic and developed at a nice pace. The secondary characters are as well developed as the primary characters The sex scenes are hot and the emotions run high. Kate Burns is a very gifted storyteller. If you want a romance that will touch your heart, I suggest you read Aphrodite’s Charms." - Missy, Coffee Time Romance

Wednesday adventure

Living on Martha's Vineyard gives me plenty of opportunity to have some outdoor adventures that some people just don't get to have very often. Today I'm doing something that I am very excited about. I'm going out on a friend's boat, a waterman. His livelihood depends on his catch from the sea and he's usually got his work boat out.

But today he's giving in to the call of the sun, the lure of a sea breeze and is taking his pleasure craft out for an afternoon sail. I love sailing, so when he called and asked if I'd like to join him, I dumped all my plans for the day.

I'm off to go sailing!

Canyon's Call excerpt

Thought I'd post a bit of Canyon's Call, my new release with Phaze.

Jake leaned down closer, lessening the gap between their faces
slightly. His arms were on either side of her body and she felt encircled
by the full, masculine form. It was a good feeling, one she hadn't
experienced in so long that she nearly didn't recall how wonderful it was
to be this close to a man.

When his lips touched hers a flash of white-hot heat shot up her
spine. With only a fraction of a second's hesitation, her lips responded to
the gentle touch of his and within moments they were pressed together in
the doorway. Their arms were around each other and their bodies already
lost to the desires neither of them knew were so close to the surface.

Carrie pulled Jake into her room and he kicked the door closed
behind them. While they were at dinner some thoughtful hotel employee
had lit a fire. It crackled warmly in the small brick fireplace as their
bodies moved toward it, like moths to a flame. When Carrie's back
settled onto the plush hearth rug and his body covered hers it felt as
natural as anything ever had.

"Carrie," moaned Jake, pulling his lips from hers. He looked down
at her, saw her flushed face and wide green eyes and moaned a second
time. "I want you, Carrie. You feel so damn good—so damn—oh!"
His eyebrows lifted in surprise at the touch of her hand on his ass,
pulling his hardness against her hip. Her firm grip left no doubt about
what she wanted to feel pressed to her body.

"Ah," he said, dropping his mouth to hers.

No talking, Jake. If we talk about it, I won't do it and God knows I
need it. I want it and I'll have it. Time to let my vibrator—and my
fingers—have a break. Time for the real thing. And baby, I can feel your
real thing—your real big thing—pressing against my hip.

Let's let the damn thing out before it strangles inside your pants.

Friday Food

Two recipes from last night's Friday Food Fest. I had three friends over and we talked and laughed until the wee hours. Too much fun, too much food, too much wine! What more could a woman ask for?! Enjoy!!

Zucchini Frittata

6 beaten eggs
1 ounce Pecarino-Romano, freshly grated
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp salt
2 tsp olive oil
1/2 cup thinly sliced zucchini
1 cup cubed red potatoes
1 tablespoon chopped parsley leaves

Whisk together eggs, cheese, pepper and salt.

Heat 12-inch non-stick, oven safe saute pan over medium high heat. Add 1 tsp olive to pan. Add potatoes to pan and saute for 2 to 3 minutes.

Remove potatoes from pan. Set aside.

Using remaining oil, saute zucchini for 3 minutes.

Return the potoatoes to the pan.

Pour the egg mixture into the pan and mix together.

Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, the egg mixture should be set on the bottom and begin to set up on top.

Sprinkle with parsley.

Place pan into oven and broil for 5 to 6 minutes, until golden brown and fluffy.

Serve immediately. Enjoy!!

Apple Coffee Cake

One 13 x 9 inch cake pan is used for this recipe.

Cake:
2 ½ cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
2 sticks of unsalted butter, slightly softened
1 cup sugar
½ cup packed dark brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 cup of buttermilk or you can use plain yogurt, thinned with some milk to give it the consistency of milk
2 cups cored and diced baking apples

Topping:
½ cup sugar
3 Tablespoons all purpose flour
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3 Tablespoons of cold, unsalted butter, cut into pieces
¾ cup coarsely chopped pecans or almonds

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter the baking dish and set aside.

Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt into a bowl. Set aside.

Beat the butter until it is creamy. Add the white and brown sugars. Beat until the mixture is light and well blended. Add the eggs, one at a time, and beat until the mixture is smooth. Then add the dry ingredients in batches, alternating with the wet milk mixture. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Do not over mix. Stir in the apples.

Pour the mixture into prepared pan.

Mix together the ingredients for the topping. Sprinkle topping over batter.

Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, about 30 minutes.

Cool before serving with ice cream. Enjoy!!

Canyon's Call

My first full-length novel with Phaze Publishing is coming out in a few days. Canyon's Call is a story I loved writing, filled with romance and cowboys, an intelligent woman and lots of surprises.

A blurb:

Carrie Reed, a highly respected genetic veterinary specialist, has it all: a successful practice, fame in her chosen field, money and a body that most women would give their eye teeth for. She's also got no male prospects in sight and a mother that loves to remind Carrie that her biological clock isn't only ticking--it's groaning. So when Jake Canyon phones he commands her attention. His voice is sexy, his tone is hot and he insists there is a new species of animal roaming around on his River View Canyon Ranch. Would she come and identify it for him?

The idea leaves Carrie gasping for air. After all, it is every geneticist's dream to find a unique species. She's got a few weeks' vacation looming and all she's got planned for it is cleaning the garage. So why not? When Jake mentions his ranch is in Alaska Carrie's heart skips another beat. It sounds like a wonderful change from Maine and although her mother insists there are no men to be found in the Alaskan wilderness Carrie decides to go to Jake's ranch. What has she got to lose? She just may find a new animal on her trip. And even if there is no new species, she figures just seeing the man that belongs to the hotter-than-fire voice will be worth the journey.

Writing, writing, writing

I've spent the past two days writing non-stop. No, really. Non. Stop.

I've had an idea brewing in my head for a while now, a story of love and deceit and it's finally screamed its way out. Yay! There's no way to describe the feeling of finally committing a story to paper (screen) and getting it out of your head. Now I'll let it rest for a while before I go back and give it a few tweaks. Then, who knows? Maybe it'll be off, let loose into the world.

Straight from my head to the world...now, isn't that a thought to be afraid of?? LOL!!

Monday already?

How does it happen? Monday comes so quickly, while Friday comes so sloooooooowly. What do you think? Time warp or something? Hmm....an idea for a book, maybe? Hmm...

This Monday I have my day planned to the minute, almost. It should be great, because I'll get heaps of stuff done. But by the time tonight rolls around, I'll be ready to fall face down onto the carpet--after I have a glass of wine, that is. What have I got to do? Oh, mostly I've got to take care of cleaning the rafting and camping equipment. My girlfriends left late last night, heading back to their realities, and since I host these little trips I'm the one who owns the equipment, so I'm the one who gets the job of cleaning it after we're done with it. Do I mind? Not really, since I love these trips and I know that once I get everything shipshape and squared away, we're ready for the next big rafting adventure.

And really, a trip with the gals is worth scrubbing down some camping gear. And that's any day of the week, not just Monday!

Hope your Monday is a good one!!

Rafting Fun

Ah, I've been rafting with the girlfriends. We've known each other for so long, it's like going away with a group of sisters. We all have gone our own ways and do different things but when we come together again, leaving the fams behind, we're all just a group of young, carefree friends again and it is great!!! We've got a bank manager, schoolteacher, minister's wife, divorced single mom, business owner and then there's me, writer. But when we're all together, we're just giggling, fun-loving women and the hours fly by for us.

We rode the waves, camped in lean-tos and showered in cold, cold, COLD water! We've been drinking too much, laughing until it hurts and catching up. Last night we stayed up all night long, watching the sun rise this morning.

Hope you're having as much fun as I am today! And wherever you are, whatever you're doing, I wish you lots of laughter and good friends to share it with.

Friday Food

Hey all, it's Friday. Don't you just love Fridays? I know I do--a lot. I have plans for this weekend but a lot of times on Friday night I have family and/or friends over for dinner. I know, I know, it's real homey and all, something that maybe you wouldn't expect from someone who writes racy romances but hey, romance writers eat too!! So in honor of my love of cooking and dinner parties and all that, I've decided that every Friday I'll share one of my fave recipes with you. Who knows? Maybe someday I'll compile a book of Burns' Recipes! Or maybe I'll call it Friday Food.

Anyhow, here's the first recipe. I love this. It's fast and easy to make and tastes great. I hope you enjoy it, too.

Fiesta Fajitas

10 flour tortillas
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 red onion, thinly sliced
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
2 red bell peppers, thinly sliced
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 yellow squash, halved and thinly sliced

1 zucchini, halved and thinly sliced
1/2 cup salsa
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Wrap tortillas in aluminum foil and place in preheated 350-degree oven for 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside.

Heat oil in a skillet over medium high heat. When oil is hot, stir in onions, red and green peppers, and garlic. Cover, reduce heat to medium, and cook for 5 minutes. Add zucchini and yellow squash, salsa, cumin, pepper and salt and stir. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.

Spoon vegetable mixture evenly down the centers of warm tortillas, and sprinkle with cheese. Roll and place in oven for additional five minutes. Serve hot, with rice.

Enjoy!

All right, all right, I give in...here's a second recipe. You twisted my arm, ha ha ha!

Chocolate Banana Bread

3 mashed bananas
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup orange juice
2 eggs
1/4 cup softened salted butter
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups Chocolate Chips
1 cup chopped walnuts or almonds, optional

Beat bananas, sugar, orange juice, eggs, butter and vanilla together in a large bowl.

Add flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt and mix well. Add chocolate chips and nuts, if desired and mix.

Divide batter evenly between 2 greased loaf pans. Bake at 350F degrees for 45-55 minutes. Allow loaves to cool slightly before cutting.

Now really enjoy!!

Catching Up

Oh, friends, I'm so sorry I've been absent for so long. Truly, I have been writing and rewriting and just generally catching up. The winter months, they do drag on sometimes. But now I'm ready to jump right into...

Spring! And all the fun it brings!!

First on my list is going white water rafting this weekend with some friends. We're psyched to shoot the suds, something we do every spring to sort of initiate ourselves again, open the warm weather seasons with a bang! Or at the very least, with a good, cold soaking. Have I mentioned that my rafting friends are all women? We leave families behind a few times each year to get together, hang around a campfire and pretend we're all back in college. Pretend we're young and wild and crazy and unencumbered by responsibilities...pretend we've got no more serious dilemmas than choosing what kind of beer to drink or where we'll shove off from the next morning. Girl bonding, I like it. Oh yeah, we talk about guys, too. A lot.

So I'm set for spring to officially begin in my world this weekend. What about you? What have you been doing?

Halfpipe Romance

It's been so cold and snowy here in the northeast that I can't help but think of this guy. Halfpipe Romance is a funny, sexy story that came out with Phaze in December 2006. It's gotten great reviews and will certainly warm you up on a cold winter's night. If you haven't read it yet, I suggest you get a copy and curl up by the fire, settle in and prepare to enjoy yourself. And don't forget to give the eye candy on the cover a good once-over, too! Isn't he sweet?!

Snorkeling

I said I'd share some of my interests with you and I'm a woman of my word. The first one: snorkeling. Now, I've you've never done it before you might have the idea that it's difficult or scary, but in actuality it's neither of those things. Just strap on the proper equipment, which is minimal, and the world of beneath-the-sea opens up for you to see! It is wonderful!

So, I love snorkeling. I've been fortunate to snorkeled in some of the most beautiful spots in the world. I've still got a few others on my to-see list, though.

Interests?

Recently I got a letter from a fan who asked me about my interests. Now, it was wonderful to get a letter from someone who enjoyed one of my titles, it always is, but it made me a bit nervous at first. Someone was interested in me, rather than my work. Hmmm....I had to sit and think. And all right, I had to have a margarita while I thought! LOL. But then I realized that it was a valid question, a good question, actually. (So thanks, Jennifer!)

Why wouldn't people be interested in the writer? It's flattering and wonderful but it's normal, I guess. I mean, I'm interested in knowing more about writers whose work I admire. So why not let my readers know a bit more about myself?

No reason that I can see. So from now on I'm going to let you all in a bit, give you a glance at my personal likes and dislikes, into the world I love and live in. And hopefully, when you drop me letters you'll tell me a bit about yourselves, too.

Within reason, that is. After all, we all need some secrets, don't we? ;-)
